Default Project completion - Monoplane

This Cirrus VK 30 has been a long term project in the shop and it left today with test pilot Len Fox at the controls.

Not being a turbine guy I had a few items to sort and Smizo was able to talk me through. Thanks Chris.

No problem Neil glad I could help but I must admit, with a post title like that I was hoping to see a pic of your AS2 ;-).

Back to the cirrus, did I hear correctly they built 4 of those? Where does that one live? I'd like to put my eyeball on it one day, neat airplane......

This one went to Colorado. Cirrus sold these as kits but then tried to buy them all back. This owner was intent on having one and didn't go for the buy back. Several have been built. No idea how many. We have one here that was built in Switzerland. The owner took it apart and shipped it to us (it was flying) and kept the Allison for another project. It is for sale if you really need a different sort of project.

My FAA records show 7 with valid airworthiness certificates in the US.

I had a good friend that was building one, but he took the "buy back".

Nice to see someone finish one.
There use to be 2 at my airport. One, a turbine, crashed short of the runway because the engine had fuel control problem. At least no one was hurt although the plane was trashed, and sat outside for years because of lawsuits. At an A&P school now. A project is still here. Cont. Voyager water cooled engine. I sometimes lend a hand; a small one. It may run soon. Those are a big project. Neat to see how the same and different the SR planes are to the VKs.

Our company tried putting one of those cont. voyager engines in a non pressurized 210. Flew about 20 hours on it and deemed it not any better after adding the weight and drag of the radiator and related parts. It looked pretty neat with the P-51 scoop between the gear and the cowl was pretty cool with no cooling holes in the front. When I started there in 2000 it was mothballed and my first project was taking all that stuff off and we fit up the turbine. I should find some pics of that thing......

We still have a voyager mock up engine. Everything but the "guts" wonder if anyone could use it?

We have a Lancair IV that Len may be coming back to put some more time on. I'll be sure to tell him hello for you. Yeah, I've seen the Peter Sellers thing.

I knew a bout the VK that crashed. Never got the whole story. Didn't know about the other.

I have a sneaking feeling that this Voyager engine was the one out of that 210. Fits your description. A year or two ago, they called Continental with a question and they said, "Oh, that is the only one unaccounted for." I guess Continental scraps them when they get a hold of them.

Just talked to my boss about it. Asked him where that water wagon engine went to (that's what we called the 210). He said some guy bought it for a cirrus pusher thing. So there ya go, mystery solved!

Pic of a pic:

This was before the P-51 scoop we had the radiator in the tail.....
