If you're a big person those quadrants sticking out into the cockpit are a negative. You can do a built-in quadrant that resides outside of the tubular structure and out of the way of the pilot and passenger.

Here are some photos for what Bill is referring to as built-in quadrants. An S1 is a single lever with a vernier mixture. The Model 12 has 2 lever quadrants with prop and throttle since the stock M14P has no mixture control. The Turbine toucan has a 3 lever quadrant for the Walter Turbine. The point is, even though the space between the tubing structure and the outer skin is really small, it i possible to tuck a quadrant in there and it is made from a bunch of simple parts that are easy to make. First pic is Turbine toucan quadrant I designed and made when we built the Airframe. The rest are standard Model 12 quadrants front and rear, inside and outside views showing link rods between them.

Default Quadrants

I am one of those "big persons". My new Baxter quadrant mounts outside the structure very similar to what Kevin is showing. The throttle handle protrudes through a 4" wide arm rest, which also resides partially outside the structure, and works just perfect. Guess I have more room to play around with in an AcroSport than is available in a Pitts or similar aircraft.
Mr. Baxter also made me a tailwheel release lever which works perfect - could not be happier with them.

Randy, please post a few pictures of your quadrant mounting. I always thought that was a possibility but I think it's lighter to do what Kevin shows so I never explored it.

Default Quadrants

Bill, you missed an immediate photo by one day. I fit evereything Sat. then Sunday removed the formers for varnish and the arm rest to use as a pattern for a CF one. I will jury-rig up a reasonable mock-up in the next day or so and send a photo

Default Quadrants

Bill, I mocked the sidewall up and took 4 photo's then removed the mockup. Unfortunately two photo's were blurry so here are the remaining two. One from outside and one from inside. I like the arm rest but I think I will lose it - it kinda defeats the purpose of putting the quadrant outside the fuselage. If you would like a better view I am sure I can take better photos

Thanks Randy, those photos are OK. Yeah, the arm rest is kinda' in the way isn't it? So you have only the throttle on the quadrant? Would a two or three lever quadrant also fit outside the structure? Seems like a good way to do it.

Yes, only one lever, throttle. The number of levers available would depend on the room between the fuselage formers and steel truss members. I have plently of room on the AcroSport for another lever or two. I am sure you could build a quadrant that included spacers to go around the 4130 tubes. One or two levers outside and one or two inside.
As far as the armrest goes I found the tube I added to attach the armrest to serves very well by itself as an armrest.

I have never wanted for an arm rest. On X-country my left hand is off the throttle and during TO's & landings and akro the hand is on the throttle and active. No need for an arm rest.

That's nice looking stuff Kevin.

I was thinking an armrest on the left might be nice. I donít see them in pictures very often though. Sounds like Bill doesnít want for one.

Leaving them out saves time and weight. Anyone have a compelling reason to add them?
