Default Eagle I flying qualities

Nice looking plane. Don't think I've ever read anything in the nature of a flying qualities report on an Eagle I and would be interested to hear how they fly from those who've had the chance. Any comments?

So far I have about 4 flights on her......Flies like an Eagle with 300 HP! ha!

With the wide chord MT it reminds me of the S-2C.....the 6 cyl is smooth compared to the 4 banger...roll rate is the same (stock ailerons) I think I will go with symmetrical ailerons in the future. Love the power and speed of the airplane, she cruises an easy 180mph!

Wow, fast. Thanks for the reply. More nice pics too.

Wonder if gmann750 has any comments re comparison of Eagle I to S2S, considering it looks like he owned both for a while.

RKO, if I remember correctly the louvers on the lower right wing are for an oil cooler. How does the plumbing for that work? Seems like a long way to go.

Thank you.....always wanted to own an "Eagle I" so when this came up I jumped..I had 2 Extra 300/S's. several Pitts, and 3 other Eagles over the last 20 years but this is kind of a special plane to own. Not many like it.

You'd think I could find a CFI and a taildragger without having to drive two or three hours. I'll need to get Pitts current too but one step at a time!

Thanks Randy, I wish you where still local to me! And a huge thanks for the kind offer regarding the Eagle, I'd love to take you up on it someday soon!

Default 540 Eagles

I have seen two 540 powered two seat Eagles over the years. The more famous one was Kurt Haukohl's(sp) "Black Eagle" that was in Houston area in mid 90's. IITC Kurt was flying Unlimited at the time and doing a credible job. Of course that was before there were Extra 300's at every other airport.
There was one in central or southwest IL around 2003. I talked to the owner but don't recall his name. I believe he mostly flew locally for pleasure- no contests or airshows.

Kurt is alive and well,,,,,just spoke to him a few weeks back, his plane has been restored and flying again with a new owner.

Don't forget about the 3 Eagle Team Airplanes, and the Eagle I F built for Frank's son which is also in Texas.

I was specifically addressing the two seat 540 airplanes. Can you provide more detail on the recent ownership of the Segalla airplane and also the status of the second Iron Eagle airplane?
Article in may Sport Aviation about 40th anniversary and history of Eagle. Some errors in article.
Is Kurt still in Long Beach area?

The "Black Eagle" lived in Louisville at Bowman Field for while as I believe it was owned by a UPS pilot. I think he is retired and moved to florida. He also had a nice Midget Mustang in the same hangar. He used to lurk here but don't know if he still does. I'm not even sure if he still owns the airplane.
