Default ADS-B transponder capability

Does an ATS-B have to be interfaced with a transponder. If so is a Norco AT 50 A suitable?

Yes, the transponder and ADS-B UAT talk to one another. If you equip with UAT, changes to your aircraft's ATCRBS Mode A or Mode A/C transponder are probably needed so that Mode A, IDENT, and Mode C information provided to the transponder and UAT units is identical. Depending on the capability of the AT50 controller you may need to install a second ADS-B controller to input the ATC code into the ADS-B. Now having said all of that, some of the slick new systems under development may mitigate some or all of the above on E-AB airplanes - talk with the new guy's reps.

I would also suggest you review AC 20-165B and talk with Nacro.

A block diagram might help.

Yea, might as well send it to me and I can put it on the shelf with my old VHT3 and other useless antiques. I have a couple old radios working when removed that I took out of various airplanes 40 years ago. When I got back into flying and joined the J3 forum I asked if the old radios were worth anything. I remember one guy who wrote me,

"You can send them to me for my collection....as long as YOU pay the shipping"

I know nothing about x-ponders, them may have a breath or two left in them but if you depend on them you may find yourself tied to the ground in 2020?
