Default Alternator/regulator trouble shooting

Hopefully someone here can help me out. I have an intermittent no charge on a S2A with a Prestolite alternator. When I first start up and turn on the alt switch I get a normal charge. It will continue through run up. Upon take off it will quit charging. If I turn offf the alt switch and on again it will show a charge again for a few seconds and then quit again. Leave it off for a bit and it will charge again for a bit and then quit. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Charlie

It sounds like a voltage regulator going over-volt,

When it does that, the over voltage relay disconnects the field from the bus.

Cycling the switch resets the over voltage relay.......and the process repeats itself.

Heat can ruin the regulator. Is it in a cool location or on the firewall.

Pull the brush block. I bet one brush is short. If you change the brushes, clean the slip rings. I have used 2000 grit paper and glass polishing paper to buff off the carbon residue.

Does that dual switch also kick off with an over voltage?...
