Default Carb temp gauge issues

Carb temp gauge goes to the peg on the minus side when power is applied. Have removed it and it works fine on the bench. When I reinstall same thing happens. Any ideas anyone. It was originally on a 172 I believe.

Look for broken wires, sounds like a short circuit or a grounding issue in the installation. Particularly where the wire loom might rub against a firewall edge or other sharp edge.
