Default Ben Lowell Contest at USAF Academy

Looks like the weather may cooperate for for me to fly up to the Springs for the contest next weekend.
What kind of performance changes can I expect and how do I need to operate my fixed
Pitch fuel injected Pitts S-1 differently than down here in the pleasantly warm oxygen rich environment of south east Texas?

I have tried to think about higher ground speed, shorter up lines, leaning for more power engine performance.

Climb up to altitude, use 7000' as the floor of the box, then fly the sequence. You should get a pretty good idea of how lean you need to feed the engine and the performance of your airplane.

If you have mode C, you could fly a bit higher but 7000' as the floor should give you a good feeling for the performance.

Hopefully you registered ahead of time. I think they sent out a notice that pre-reg was reqd for security reasons since its at the base.

Expect high landing speeds. Normally over the fence at 90 mph. You will have an optional break per new rules. It is a fantastic contest site. I will be there Tech Insp and Judging. Make sure all the Military Visitation paperwork in done as mentioned.

If you have any questions give me a call on the Cell 303-304-7937.

Add the density alt factor. Takeoff around 10,500 MSL. Enter the box at 18,000 density. Figure 50 - 60% performance. It is just pure fun and energy management challenge. JST

I flew the Dillon, CO, airshow in 2015 and 2016. Density altitude of 14,000. The air was spongy, and we all flew very conservatively, but it can be done. Just leave PLENTY of cushion beneath you.
