I base out of an airport at 5000' in CO and we frequently see surface DA of 8000'+. Its nothing to be afraid of just something to respect. If you understand how DA affects aircraft performance you should be fine. You will climb slower, your TO/Landing rolls will be longer, your ground speed will be much higher than you are used to for a given airspeed so dont let your speed get too slow. Having learned to fly here too I dont understand the flatlander mentality of "mixture forward", it just doesnt happen here, ever. Even taxiing I usually pull that little red knob away from the panel a bit to prevent plug fouling on the ground.

Lots of the above comment about the Wyoming airports are all good comments. I fly into most of them at least once a year. Go early, go light, and go with the big runways.

Regarding landings at high DA conditions...

Is a three point or wheel landing somehow favored under high DA conditions?

Whatever you are more comfortable with in your airplane is the type of landing recommended. The only thing that changes is your ground speed. Groundspeed for a given airspeed will be considerably higher. And if you're not paying attention your eyeballs outside the plane will tell you are going way too fast and you'll change pitch/power when you shouldnt. trust your ASI and fly the numbers you know and trust.

First time I flew below 4000' msl was after I had been flying for about 5 years. Just about had to change my shorts with how slow my buddy was when he was bringing the cub in to land. I thought we were just going to fall out of the sky. In reality, thats how slow planes normally fly so I had the reverse effect to adjust for in my mind.

Glenn, to adjust your takeoff distance requirement for density altitude, use a "Koch Chart". You can Google the term to find one, or just go to this link. There is a Koch Chart on page 3.

I completed the flight today. C77 to PVF over 4 days, a total of 20.4 flight hours.

What a trip! No major issues. Details on the trip to follow in coming days.

So here is are the photos.... it's hard to fly and take pictures with a point and shoot out of an open cockpit. The windscreen is prone to reflections, and the open air buffets the cameras.

Looks like an awesome trip! Thats all in my backyard. Powder river basin coal mines, the gold and silver mines in Nevada, I stop in Rawlins fairly often. Beautiful country and some beautiful airplanes!

Very cool. I hit Carson (CXP) as my overnight stop on my trip to California last year, about 20 minutes south of RNO. That's a pretty breathtaking swath of, "Where the hell will I land if my engine quits" territory, isn't it?

Great pictures. I have done that trip out and back twice. I could probably point out on a map where each picture west of Nebraska was taken. Very nice trip
