Default Aileron hinge material

I am at a point where I need to make the aileron hinge brackets for my S1C so I can fit ailerons to wings. The plans say to make them out of 2024 T4 extrusion but I cannot find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can purchase this extrusion?. Does anyone use 4130 to make them?. It would be much less work using the extrusion if I can locate it. Thanks! in advance.

Default Hinges

The Aviat S1 plans have an Alcoa part number for the extruded channel. I have used .050 4130 with a wider "pad" tack welded to the channel similar to the aileron fittings that bolt to the wing spar. The "pad" helps stabilize the fitting and reduces possibility of crushing the aileron spar.
If you want to search fot the aluminum I would try to track down Herb Anderson and see if he remembers where the factory purchased it in his era. I believe Herb is still in Afton.

I purchased some extrusion from the factory decades ago, they may still have it available but be sitting down when you get the price......

4130 will work fine, I'd take Jim's wisdom on that option. Or you can machine them out of aluminum. If I need more than I have I'd do that using some scrap 7075-T6 I happen to have.

Are these the right mounts? I bought these years ago thinking i'd use them on a different project. I fabricated something else so they've been collecting dust. Cheap if you need them.

I looked at them hard but don't think they will work on an old C but appreciate the offer. I will ask Aviat at Oshkosh about the Extrusion but at this point will probably go with 4130 if I can determine what thickness would be sufficient. I am no way an Engineer so will get some suggestions from some who know more about that than I do.

I was told that extrusion was proprietary to Aerotek/ Aviat. I think its also used on the Eagle. I have a chunk of it that Herb Anderson gave when I ferried an S2 S from the factory in 1983. It was too long for the turtledeck so I taped to the fuselage in the cockpit. Guess I haven't found a use for it. How much do you need? I will sell you some if you still want aluminum.

Take him up on that deal there. The bearings will fit exactly and you'll have the same material as all the certified and a lot of EXB Pitts aircraft. I also got some from Herb years ago but only enough to use up over the years. This was an extrusion Curtis actually had made for the S1S/S2 wings. Supposedly if you bought 1,000 feet of an extrusion a company like Reynolds, Alcoa, or ?? would make a die to your specs and you would have the proprietary rights to that particular extrusion.

I worked out a deal with Knight Twister. For curiosity sake I am going to ask Aviat at Oshkosh and will post results on forum.

I am fortunate to have found some without having to deal with that, thanks again. I have already had sticker shock with them when I paid $50.00 X 2 for small pieces of foam to go inside gear fairings. I thought it was some special type of foam but it was the normal beige colored foam like you can get anywhere. It did have a PN written on it with a marker. I guess it is what it is but I am learning quickly.

Aviat was everyone's go to place until Stu Horne took it over. Virtually overnight the prices trebled at a minimum. I know they used to do a brisk parts business but I feel they don't really care these days. There are enough airplanes out there now that I'm sure there is a good business working insurance claims. Having lower wing panels priced close to 50K certainly help the income that never could have been equaled by nickel and dime parts sales.

I still get the Tygon fuel guage tubing there though. Seems like it's about the only thing that hasn't gone apesh!t on the price list.

Long before Stu got involved I used to buy lots of S1 parts. It was usually something I didn't like to make. Rudder and elev. hinges was one I could buy cheaper than I could make them. Lanny Swenson was the parts mgr. during the period I bought the most stuff. My two visits to Afton when Herb Anderson was captain of the ship was something I'm glad I got to do. I met Stu at biplane expo shortly after the S2C came out. I think their demo airplane that Stu rode in with the factory pilot was for sale for 207,000. I thought who's going to pay that kind of jack for one of those. Turns out quite a few people did.
