The Pilot and I flew to many contests together. Aircraft was destroyed. I pulled it out of the field on my lowboy. We purchased the wreckage and salvaged what we could. The engine ended up on RV-7 that is owned by a friend of mine. I maintain. Painted the same as 313CA Pitts. The rudder pedals and wheels and brakes ended up on my SS-300. N22R had a hard life. It was involved in a head on taxi accident with a S1T Pitts out of Luck Field, FTW. We discovered when the aircraft was being repaired the builder deviated from the plans and attached the cabane struts by rolling them over the longerons. Not butt welded and plated. It would have collapsed with outside Gs. It was repaired and converted to a S1S with large 3/4 Span Ailerons. Had some flutter in flt test. Then wrecked. So parts of N22R fly on. In fact I think I will fly the wheels and pedals this AM.
Interesting story. I remember some of the talk about the airplane was the workmanship was crude but Ralph Page had put a real slick finish on that diverted attention away from what was underneath. It was one I sat in and dreamed of flying.
