Default Building wing tip

Building wing tips is the last thing on my list of things to do, that I dread due to my distaste for fiberglass work and lack of knowledge in doing it.
That being said, Smizo has impressed me with his carbon fiber work.
Any ideas on books or videos I can study to learn how to do this?
Thanks

Are you looking to mold a set of tips, or do you just want to make them right on the wing? When the proto types were built, they just glued a chunk of foam on the end of the tip rib and carved it to shape then glassed over the foam.

I didn't want to mess with building a pair of molds for mine and wanted something a bit different so I made wood tip bows.

Thanks Neal. I really have no preference. Reading your reply I remembered the center section is done that way so it should be ok on the tips as well, but from a learning standpoint, I need to get over my fiberglass phobia.
My Acro II is really close to being finished, if I could focus on it for a winter, and I have a Acro I project that bought that I need to finish next. After seeing Smizo's build, I would like to learn carbon fiber to maybe, not rival his build, but add more detail to it.

I work with Glass every day and still don't like it. There are lots of smaller jobs you can do to get over that roadblock like making an oil cooler plenum or air inlet box. Wing tip are sort of out there for all to see.
Here's my upper wing tip. Rib was built in place then gussets added.

I had seen that on another post of yours. Looks real nice. Wish I had thought of that for mine but, I'm so close I hate to change it.

At one time Wag-Aero may have had molds for Acro 1&2 wing tips. You could give them a call.

Then Chris has the molds for his............

Hey Taylor, if you would like to talk about the process I would be happy to give you a call sometime. pm me your number and we can discuss. I do have wing tip molds that I got from Dennis, but they do not lend themselves to vacuum bagging. plus, they do not come out as smooth as I would like. they were however good to give me something to work with. when im done with my airplane, im going to make new molds for the wing tips that will allow me to vacuum bag them. anyways, doing CF work isn't difficult, just another task to learn how to do. talk to you soon!

Bought mine from WAG I think. Not cheap but good quality and fit. Worth the coin for something you don't have to make.

Neil,
I like what you done with manufacturing and adding that extra rib. I may go and do that myself

Chris,
I don't mind working with fiberglass. In fact I used to make wind fairings for my Lambretta scooter years ago...about 45! ouch!!
Anyway, I have a vacuum pump and plastic bag etc. but never used them.
Is it possible one day to do a short pictorial of a lam up and bag of a small project your doing?
I think that would be very interesting for many forum members...well, if not many. It would be for one

What I find interesting is; there are so many types of cloths and weaves and different resins.

As you say, like forming metal or welding or spray painting. Laminating carbon or glass appears difficult when you don't know much about it but can be enjoyable and satisfying with a little knowhow.

That's what's great about this forum...obtaining knowhow. Know what I mean?
