Default Stampe SV4

I've finally started building a biplane - a replica Stampe SV4B from original drawings. It may be a fully scratch built project but I will try to pick up airworthy parts along the way as the budget allows.

Why a Stampe? I wanted 2 seats, mostly wood construction and something I can do gentle aerobatics in. The Stampe fits the bill nicely and I've never heard a bad word said about them.

I've started on the tailplane ribs. They are built in one piece. I was going to cut them at the appropriate point when the time came to attached them to their respective spars. My TC pointed out that I could built a very straight ad accurate tailplane by attaching the ribs to the spars all in one piece then cutting away the elevator. Should work nicely!

Here is the CAD drawing I did up for my jig (tapered tailplane so more jigs to be built!):

Here is the plan view of the tailplane (without elevators shown) so you can see a little of the detail:



The RH tailplane has the trim tab and associated metal fittings so it's a little more complicated.

Hmmmm I didn't realize it had a wood tail? What else is wood besides wings?

Do you plan on installing the the leading edge before cutting or after? I like the pivoting locks on your jig!

Is this being built from factory plans or is it a French homebuilt copy?

From factory plans. I have both the French and Belgian plans so it may be slight mix of both. Very little difference between them to start with anyway.

The plans are very good - far better than most homebuilt plans. They even show construction jigs, particularly for the fuselage along with the building table itself. A supplementary sheet provides details on how to set up your factory to build Stampes in large quantities!

Everything! Well, wood fuselage, wood wings and empennage. Even the rudder ribs are wood (Aluminium trailing edge on rudder and elevators).

There is still a lot of aluminium sheet and cast/machined parts. Very little steel.

One of the attractions for me to the design is because of all the wood. I didn't want to build a 'Pitts' style tube fuselage and tail. Just a preference for me, nothing wrong with either approach.

I was planning to add both LE and TE to keep everything in line before cutting the elevators off. The structure will be more rigid too, which should help when working on things like final shaping of the LE.

Are these the factory plans on CD or have you found a paper version outlet? Interesting that it is an all wood design. Something that seems to be missed to most of us.

Expat - that would b greatly appreciated! One area that's a mystery to me is how the horizontal stabiliser attaches to the fuselage.

Yes - both drawings sets are electronic. It means they are easy to get hold of and not too costly.

Lots of wood and alloy ('Dural') and steel! I would be interested in comparing the wing and tail structures of the Stampe and Jungmann/Jungmeister - they look suspiciously similar!

The Stampe fuselage is a little more complex than you would expect - things like adjustable seats and control components that are mostly cast parts.

Not overly complex but it has its challenges. Anyone who has built a WW1 design would find it familiar!

It's a bit unusual for a wood biplane but the seat mounting and height adjustment set- up for front and rear seats seems more complex than the control system!

I know you like WW1 planes and it looks like it has a bunch of that construction. More of a transition design.

Keep it coming. I love hearing about a project like this. I flew a jungman years ago but never been around a Stampe. Always liked them just from pictures.

You have picked one of my favourite biplanes I fly. I have had the good fortunate to test 2 after 30 year rebuilds and found them delightful.My ramblings-
1/ dont try to duplicate the air tank starter - it will put you in the nut house
2/ consider the czeck inverted 4 engine. The original renault or gypsy major is a high expense and worry. ( I have had 2 failures of the gypsy)
3/ the closest handling (similar bip) is the jungman. That is high praise Im giving for the stampe.

This is one I flew just this tuesday.

Nothing wrong with the Gypsy Major engine at all, unless it hasn't been overhauled by someone that knows what they are doing. Very reliable.
I have over 1500hrs behind Gypsy Majors.
They do however get carb ice in certain circumstances so knowledge of when and why makes all the difference.

The Walter Lom engines are also good by all accounts.

Default Engine options

There are a few engine options that I am considering. Still saving my pennies and won't need it for about 5 years yet.

Options are:

Walter LOM M332A 140hp
DH Gypsy Major
Renault

I think for availability and ease of operation the M332A is my preference. It's also a bit better power/weight ratio than the older engines so it should give the Stampe good takeoff and aerobatic performance. There is also a CSU version....
