• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Ok here we go. This is going to be a very interested journey. Picked up 2 Skybolt projects long under way. From what I can figure out both of these planes were started back in the 80’s. One fuselage is on wheels one needs wheels. Wings are trash and need to be rebuilt. I’m going to post a couple pictures and trying to find what I see and get some thoughts first. I’ve gone through everything I have and putting all the labels and addresses together. I found the original drawings and another set not used. I have several names and addresses I’ll throw out and see if I can start tracing back.

lets start with existing rib pictures. What am I seeing? I see a Douglas Fir rib with very few plys. I see ribs not glued to the spar but corner blocks glued with what? White what? I have used resorcinol two part glue back in the 70’s when I first started Re- building a Miniplane . Built the flat wing, then someone said how about this rib and I built another set. That set was from the T-Craft, I think but the 23012 airfoil. Sold those and got into another set. I think I discovered T88 on the last set but new hew this white stuff. Its very brittle. The ribs aren’t Finnish Birch plywood as the should be. I’ve built a set of Cassutt wings back in the 90’s and used the birch or maple. Now in all this I found a box from Sparcraft. The ribs in there are the correct material. Does any one know that Douglas Fir was an acceptable material? I built the spars from Doug Fir. I crossed paths with Dan Rhinn when he was building the 107. That spar was Doug Fir. Thoughts?
