• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

2006 Hatz Classic Biplane $47,000
With a heavy heart, I've decided to put my Hatz Classic up for sale. The realities of parenting makes this not the best time in life to own a super cool biplane, so...
Hatz Classic S.N. 022 started 09/2001 finished 09/2006. Origional builder had built two Lancairs previously and was an Aerospace/Nuclear engineer. The builder was getting up in age and the airplane only flew for a total of 40 hours before he was no longer able to fly, and it was parked in 2009. There is a patch on the left lower wing that probably led to the airplane being stored. The builder's family hangared the airplane in dry Eastern Idaho from 2010 -2017, when I bought it from his estate and flew it back to Texas. In the last two years, I have flown it 120 hours.
The plane was built from a full Makelan kit, all welding and metal fittings were done at the factory. Covering, painting and custom leather interior were professionally done. Engine is a 160 hp Lycoming 0-320-D3G from a Piper Warrior. The engine has @355 hrs. SMOH in 2000, Unfortunately in January 2019 I had a prop-strike (my fault) and the engine was torn down for a prop-strike inspection. The crankshaft, camshaft, camshaft gear, connecting rods, lifters and piston pins were inspected and refinished as needed by Aircraft Specialties and were resembled with new bearings, rod bolts and nuts, and crankshaft gear bolt and retainer. I was going to do a full overhaul while it was apart, but the cylinders were in very good condition, so we decided to do the repair only. The carburetor was replaced with an overhauled unit and the propellor was replaced with a new Sensenich. All work was completed by a A/P mechanic.
