I've started considering AcroSportII's in my aircraft search, and have seen a few different Acrosport II's for sale out there with a variety of canopy options, from open cockpit, to the single Pitts racer style, to the full S-2 style double canopy. I know of an open cockpit one offered for sale nearby and I'm curious how easy/difficult/costly installing one would be if I decided I'd rather have a canopy option. I have no building or mechanic experience, but it seems with experimentals, you do have options. But I imagine it's not that simple. Thanks for any insight anyone can offer.

To go from open cockpit to full closed canopy like an eagle or S-2 is a big project.
There's stuff that's gonna have to be fabricated ( invented first) and welded to the fuselage which may even turn into a recover job, worse case.

Thanks. Same for the single racer style canopy? I appreciate it.

Do a search here for canopy install. You will see people spending months on it and complaining the whole time! :D It is a major hit in time and money to add a canopy.

The racer style, Pitts S-1, canopy is easier to install if you go the Art Scholl route and attach the rails to the outside of the sheet metal. There are pictures in some threads of different canopy install options.

    Best of luck,

    Wes

Here are some youtubes of Chris (Smizo) yellow Acro and our red and white with Pitts canopy bought used with all the hard work done for around $500. i built the front collar on a jig set on a table while my son had the Acro at another airport. The only trick was the Pitts is narrower and different height and width of panel so the collar had to adapt the Pitts windshield curve to the Acro fuselage. You could do the Pitts canopy in one week.
Chris can tell you how hard his was.

Single place is fairly simple with rails on outside. Two place canopy is a HUGE endeavor.

I eventually plan on a canopy similar to this one, but that will be sometime after I get it flying.

The canopy in post #8 and the windshield in post #9 are pure airplane porn. LOL :)

I'm going to build one of those racer windshields like post 9 in the next couple of weeks. If it works out I'll post step by step instructions in the 101 thread.

This is of great interest as my Acrosport 2 is being reassembled after metal painting, and l have the canopy yet to make. Been thinking of a full sliding canopy but havent found any suitable rails yet.
