The Burbank Tournament of Roses is auctioning off, via eBay, the
decorated biplane that was a key element in Burbank's 2010 Parade Entry
"Barnyard Aces", which won the Best
Animation Trophy for Best Animation and Motion, in this year's Pasadena
Tournament of Roses Parade. This was
the City of Burbank and the Burbank Tournament of Roses Association's first
ever Animation Trophy win.
The plane, which is a replica of a Stearman PT-17, or Model 75
"Stearman" Kaydet, at 55% actual size. The plane was mounted on the
float on a 15 ft animated boom, which suspended, rotated, and spiraled in
simulated flight as it "soared" down Colorado Boulevard on New Years
Day. A total of 9,783 PT-17's
were built in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s, as a military
trainer aircraft and were used throughout World War II. After the conflict was over, thousands of
surplus aircraft were sold on the civil market. In the immediate post-war years
they became popular as crop dusters and as sports planes. One fun fact is that
Steve McQueen owned a PT-17.
