• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Had an "interesting" incident yesterday which suggests to me that I should maybe complete my radio install.

I'm out in the sticks. Based at the old Cumberland, Md. airport 1W3. No radio. Go next door to the big airport KCBE for fuel on a regular basis. Not very busy and easy enough to observe which runway they are using before I take-off if anyone happens to be flying.

Anyway went there and fueled the Acroduster 2 yesterday. No one flying. 1W3 is 150' lower than KCBE and wind is often/usually different. I had landed on RW 23 with a very slight tailwind. 23 is the runway usually used.

The wind increased while fueling and was now about 5-10 mph down 05 so I decided to take-off on 05. I taxied down the cross runway, did a run-up, looked both ways(REALLY LOOKED), lined up on 05 and pushed the throttle forward. Maybe 5 sec. before I pushed the tail up and I saw the landing lights of a light twin on final coming at me. I lifted off and made a immediate right turn and noted he had also gone around. I swung around climbing to downwind and landed to the E @ 1W3. I didn't see the twin again.

I'd say we were 1 mile apart when I made my hard right turn so no real conflict. I am glad he had his landing light on...... (I suspect he was on base pretty far out when I looked/ as I lined-up and had turned to final when I raised the tail?)

I was told later it was the governor of WV's airplane. That's interesting.

Yea, be careful out there. And yes I admit UNICOM is of value. But no excuse not the keep your eyes open.

So far no WV Troopers at the house.
