• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Thought I would start a more specific thread.
I have only built stick ribs until now. What is the recommended plywood for the ply ribs in a Starduster? ACS lists 1/4 domestic Mahogany for ~$245 a sheet and 6MM Okume for ~$100.
What other sources are people using?
I found this from Noahs marine in Toronto Ontario
MERANTI BS1088 HYDROTEK 6MM 5 PLY MARINE GRADE PLYWOOD 4'X8' SHEET

$95/1 $85/10 sheets

They have a number of types but Meranti looks best.
Meranti Plywood, 48" x 96, 1.3 mm face veneers (before sanding.) Equal or nearly equal laminations. Water and boil proof (WBP) glue. Color range is dark to light reddish brown, face veneers are one piece, grain tends to be fairly even and straight . The wood is harder, more rot resistant than Okoume, and makes a stiffer slightly heavier panel. Good structural plywood particularly for bottoms and larger boats. Our customers also use this for decks, freezers, signs, exterior structures, cabinets and about anything else you can think of requiring a tough stable water proof durable panel. Our BS 1088 is Lloyds certified, the BS 6566 version allows slightly thinner veneers and some filled end splits in the faces, but the same void free core and WBP glue. This makes a more affordable alternative for most applications.
