Because of the AD that exists on them, a few months back I decided to remove and inspect the McCauley wheels on my Skybolt project.
(The wheels and brakes were installed by the previous owner, and I did not have first hand knowledge of the condition.)
It's a good thing I did. I found two minor, and one very major crack in the left wheel (center portion).
Here is my question... when the calipers were removed, the fluid that started coming out was clear.
Is it common in the homebuilder world to use automotive brake fluid?
I guess I can see an advantage to using something like ATE fluid that I used in my race car, as the ATE fluid has a much higher boiling point than 5606. However there is something to be said for using a fluid that every FBO carries in their shop.
