• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

This was taken from another thread. using it to start the conversation of this topic.
[Hi Dennis.

Thanks and I know what you mean about the difficulty of the engine cowling. I think this is my third attempt!
My project for the coming week / s. I will take a picture or two as this gets underway again. But for now, my story begins with...
This was done over a year ago (a long time) and I thought this time, this would be smooth sailing, a quick install one more time to check everything and... It didn't fit! No idea' I think it was the high heat baking after the powder coating that shrunk the tubes

Anyway I am trying to salvage the bottom of the engine cowl and continue from there.
Will start a new post when I get into this a bit further].

The new post:
Building the lower engine cowl. After months of not installing what I thought was a good fit, there was no way I could make it work. Rather than starting from scratch I decided to trim the sides off and make detachable side panels.
I think I could benefit from this for ease of fabricating the lower engine cowl and an added benefit of wide open spaces if need be for maintenance time, by unscrewing and removing side panel.
Included a bunch of pictures to show the plan so far. one side only at this time. And as to the hinged lids? I am sure that will be another saga!

Rather than describe everything I done, better to send pictures to show:
