    Project 40% ASIIS
Being a bipe enthusiast all my life, I knew when I saw Chirs Murley’s custom built Acro Sport II S finished and flying it had to be built as a giant scale model.
On December 3rd 2017 the "Project 40% ASIIS" journey began and 800 and some hours later on July 28th the journey was completed.

The ASIIS's little 40% cousin officially took to the air on July 28th after a myriad of issues that a prototype sometime brings.
If the full scale flies as well as the 40%er no wonder why Chris loves it.
The 40% is one awesome plane in the air with it's best maneuver being landing.
It's very agile for a 50+ pound model in the air regarding areo., yet it's a ***** cat to land with zero bad habits so far.
It totally blows my mind because with the engine configuration (0 thrust setup), airfoil (12% fully symmetrical self generated airfoil) and wing configuration (both wings at zero and no dihedral in bottom wing) it should not act as it does.
I was concerned about the rudder throw (not as much as I normally would have) and coupling issues due to lack of sub-rudder area that there would be a large amount of coupling required for KE flight. The rudder throw is more than sufficient for precise stall turns, snaps, etc. but it does required a fair amount of elevator/aileron coupling to sustain KE flight.
The DLE 170/MTW internal canister exhaust/Biels 30-12 3 blade prop setup is extremely quiet and provides ample power for very scale flight.
Most told me that the plane would not fly as anticipated without down and right thrust, and it is one of the truest flying plane I have designed to date with zero rudder/elevator mix to counteract any thrust issues.

Anyway......happy air to all the dedicated biplane enthusiasts out there !

    “Project 40% ASIIS” data:
The aircraft is a custom designed and built 40% sized model of the full scale ASIIS.
All aircraft design, CAD, construction etc. was completed by myself with Chris molding up the carbon fiber landing gear for the project.
    Aircraft Specs:
    Top wing span - 105”
    Bottom wing span - 100”
    Fuselage length - 100”
    Weight - 50.5 lbs
Engine - DLE 170cc 2 stroke opposed twin cylinder
Exhaust System - MTW canisters located on the inside of the fuselage
    Prop - Biela 30-12 CF
Construction - balsa wood, sitka spruce, aircraft plywood and carbon fiber.

    Project dates:
    Design/CAD 12/3/2017 to 1-7-2018 (approx. 150hrs)
    Construction 1-7-2018 to 7-22-2018 (approx 650hrs)
Maiden flight was on 7-28-2018 at Herb Grayek’s private airfield.

So prop had to come off and go to catto for an “update” we will leave it at that. Let’s just see how it shows up when it comes back........

Was a good reason to go over fwf. No issues found. 82 hrs TT.

    Chris,
Why did you end up needing the prop extension? I’m having trouble remembering

Hey Chris, just checking in here for the first time in awhile. Nice work at the contest! To finish third in your very first event is stunningly good.

    When's the next one?
