• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I just thought I'd pass on an idea I had finally worked out. I always found it a problem for me to get my foot all the way up and over the cockpit combing without grabbing my cuff to help the last 6 inches. Maybe if your name is Mikhail Baryshnikov or you have real long legs it's not a problem, but it was for me. At first I thought I could weld a plate to the lower and upper longerons and cut a mouse hole for my foot with a spring flap to close up for flight, but that got real involved and was going to be heavy. Then I saw a SNJ and the light went on. The SNJ steps can still be found surplus for around $100, so all it takes is a short piece of 1 1/4" ID pipe welded to the existing uprights to accept the lug on the step and that was basically it. My bird is an AS1 but it would probably work for an AS2 also. Garry
