• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

HELP!!!

Over the past couple of months I have been fighting with a bucket of dope and my my ceconite covered pieces and parts. I live in Southeast TX and have had problems with humidity and heat. About every 3rd coat of nitrate or butyrate, I get either blush or holes in the finish due to reducer vapors escapingor both. My painting experience is growing but very limited.

The towel has been thrown in and I am now searching for a process that I can spray (using Axis Citation 4 turbine) over my coats of dope already (up to silver on the ailerons and rudder) applied. I am doing my best to learn about the Loehle Coating (of the 5151 Mustang fame) and Air Tech. I like what I have read about the Loehle processbut I have not found anyone that has used them other than Loehle on his planes. They are less expensive... but at this point cheap is not as important as the best process for my plane. I read on the Pitts Model 12 group site that the Kimball's are using PPG Omni CV. I have not been able to find anything about that process but will call them to ask when able.

Any advice about painting and materials or experience with different manufactureswould be appreciated. One could try to convince me to stick with the dope process, but I can't reach the towel I threw in at this point.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Phil
