• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I have zero training in "airflow," "engine cooling," "exhaust flow," or pretty much anything else so I am completely qualified to ask a dumb question - - -
To facilitate inner cowl cooling I have seen exit lips, louvers, (top - bottom - sides) cheek vents, air flow vanes, coated exhaust pipes and insulated exhaust pipes to stop radiant heat, etc., etc., etc.
Right on the lower front of most cowls sets the carb. intake. Above that is the cylinder cooling intakes. Thats it, any cooling air exits are at the top/bottom/sides of the cowling.
So, the question. Would it not work to have openings in the front of the cowl to allow a flow of air straight through the cowling and out the exhaust deflector ?
My simple reasoning -
1) Allowing some of the air in front of the cowl to pass through means less drag as it does not use HP to be pushed to the sides out of the way
2) A flow of air across the bottom of the cowl is going to create some vacuum to help pull air through the cylinders and oil cooler
3) This flow of air will carry exhaust heat out before it radiates so much.

I can't believe I had this stupendously brand new idea on my own so please tell me why it won't work so I can stop thinking about it :)
Thank you,
