• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I've been around aviation for around 50 years now . I've seen designs come and I've seen allot of these designs remain but ultimately get replaced as technology and the general aviator is not satisfied with the stagnant past and his or her accomplishments as they delve off into what's next , (doesn't matter which design) , weather single wing or dual . My preference leans more to the dual wing . I watched as Leo L introduced the mid wing to the world and its progression that eventually (through Mr Extra) and technology somehow reconstructed the competition structure that killed the likelihood of a BI winged airplane being able to compete on a consistent basis . I have noticed that there are things that the Bi winged planes do preform certain Aristi characters better than the mono wing counterparts and likewise for mono winged planes but that part of the competition seemed to get changed to the benefit of (guess who) . This all beside the point but if nothing else debatable . I guess being that I lean towards BiPlanes and care very little about the Mono winged versions , I find myself looking at the Biplane design and being a kraphouse engineer I would be really interested in opinions as to the best design balance for a biplane ,doesn't have to be the # One biplane out there . There are so many factors , span ,upper and lower , length , cord , stagger , weight , C/G , engine , etc. . I know that when Mr. Pitts sat down and scratched out the first Pitts , and built it , he had no idea exactly what he was gonna get till he climbed in and firewalled it . A lot has been learned since then and the Pitts is probably the airplane that has seen the most modifications in the history of airplanes . I guess what I'm looking to find (being so many variations out there) where to look for a basic design balance and I know this depends totally on what the individual wants out of their aircraft . Hope this makes sense and all input is so welcome .
