• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I have a B&C 35 amp alternator and regulator on an M-14P. I installed a new battery during my annual, in March. Flew it a few weeks ago, voltage:14.4; ammeter: near zero. All normal. Then last week I was headed out for a flight and the voltage was 11.5, ammeter showing about +2 amps.

Today I was troubleshooting and found oil in the two-blade plug on the alternator. I cleaned all that out, then ran the engine, and the voltage was at 14.4=normal, but the ammeter was showing a minus 14 amps. Well, I did have the ammeter wired in reverse, so I switched the wires around and got, of course, +14 amps, with the voltage still showing 14.4.

The battery has been on a trickle charge for several days, so it's charged up, and with the engine running and the radios on I am pulling no more than about 5 amps.

What's up, and how do I troubleshoot it? Anyone...anyone...Bueller...

Danny
