• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Hi

I recently bought another Skybolt and after 6 months of paperwork I have finally been allowed to fly it. :):):)
One snag though is the engine mount. The engine is an IO360 CIC with a rear throttle body and the mount is exactly as shown in the build newsletter, ie just straight tubes to a Dynafocal ring without any diagonal cross bracing tubes. Also the bottom tubes are not connected as is shown in the latest plans from Steen. Whilst I do have an old set of plans a few pages are missing and one must be the drawing for the mount. It seems that the mount design has been improved / beefed up along the way and this aircraft is from 1990 and must predate that.
I have been told that the setup I have is OK with a fixed pitch prop but not substantial enough for use with a CS prop, which I do plan to add at some point. Could anyone tell me the history of the mount design and what the implications are of the old design?

Thanks

Jason
