• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I am about to install my fuel system, but I am not sure where toplace the gascolator. Asone purpose of the instrumentis to collect water, it should be mounted on the lowest possible place of the fuel system. I know that most airplanes have the gascolator mounted on the engine side of the firewall, but this is not the lowest position on my plane. Being a taildragger the lowest part of the system is in the cockpit on the floor next to the shut off valve. So should the gascolator be placed here ??
When I think about it, gascolatorsare always placed after the shut off valve. But when this valve is shut, no water will be collected. So in reality the gascolator is only working as a water trap when the airplane is flying. In other words the water collecting function is not existing at all, if the valve is shut after flying ( which I think it should be ). Or am I quite wrong ?
