• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I'm new to the real plane flying thing, planning to take some lessons for the first time this summer. I'm wondering, for those of you flying aerobatic planes and the like, how you got started. Clearly a Pitts or the like isn't a good training plane. Did you get a normal pilots license and rent until you were good enough to fly the plane you wanted? Did you buy a more traditional plane to get some experience time in and then move up to the plane you really wanted?

Also, what kind of license do you have? Sport, pp, etc.

Just trying to learn all I can before I start spending the $. I obviously have a lot of time & money to go (getting my training and cert) before any of this really matters, but I like to start my research early.

Lastly, do you need to know what type of cert you want before starting training? I'm not sure if I'll want a regular private pilots cert. or a sport pilot cert. Do I need to make this call before I start my training?

Thanks,

Dan
