• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Is this the right choice

Hi all,

Interestingly, my first Thread or Post on this forum is one asking if I am making the right choice.

I have searched through the 8 pages of Threads in the Wings category - looking at Threads on Varnishes, materials etc. etc.

I am currently looking at purchasing a complete or near complete aircraft. It needs a little finishing and provides a real opportunity to add - I guess - my own personal touch.

The Steen Aero Skybolt appeals to me, as I have searched through the many Barnstormer adds and articles and the Hot Rodder in me comes out!!

However, in discussion with pilots at the aero club, there has been some comments made about how durable and weather resistant the material covering is on the wings.

I am currently looking across the airport at a Tiger Moth that sits outside the majority of the time.

My point is - I am considering the Steen Aero Skybolts and I have access to a hangar, but not full time. I will use this plane between airports to commute and it will be left out in the open a lot of the time.

Will I basically destroy a great aircraft by leaving it out?

Do any of the Forum users leave their Steen Aero Skybolts out in the open?

Should I look at a more suitable aircraft?

Is there a wing cover that someone has tried?

Sorry about all of the questions!!

Just a little background on me - that may make sense to my choice of this particular aircraft. I own a '65 Mustang convertible car and a '66 Ford GT40. I have owned and built a '37 Ford convertible and a '28 Ford Roadster.Hence the Hot Rodder in me.

I guess this explains my liking for this neat little aircraft.

Hope someone may be able to throw a few ideas at me.

Will the wings stand up to the elements if left outside for the majority of the time????

Thanks in anticipation of some thoughts.
