In the next month we will be moving off vBulletin 3 and to Xenforo. vBulletin is currently on version 5, so 3 is pretty old, it's no longer supported.

vBulletin 5 is pretty universally hated. I really hate it. All the quality developers of vBulletin 3 which was/is awesome software, left several years ago and started Xenforo. So Xenforo is like a modern vBulletin 3.

There are many reasons to leave vB3 but security is #1. vB3 is no longer supported, so if there is an exploit, they won't inform people. We also need to move to SSL (https) for added security.

Other reasons are xF is quicker, the webpage is responsive so desktop/mobile it still looks great. You don't have to 'Manage Attachments' anymore, if you have an image, you can just paste it in the quick reply box.

Visually the site will look almost the same. There MIGHT be a learning curve for a few but it's really similar to this software. We have importers for all the Likes and other categories like Photos/Planes/Downloads.

First, thanks for all the effort past and present. I may be a recent arrival to the forum, but appreciate it very much.

A question that immediately popped into my mind regards thread subscriptions... any idea if they will be imported into the "new" accounts?

Great to hear about https and the more current (updatable) software.

Wait, what? I thought this forum hosting thing was easy, sounds like there is more to it than one would think.

Yup, those things. I'm going to save my thread subscriptions by name, just in case I have duplicate them on the new system. It's a minor thing, don't lose sleep over it. :)

Thanks for the update. I look forward to having a more secure and currently-supported system! Having modern image handling will be an excellent upgrade all by itself.

I hope not. I can see a need for self deletion within a very short time limit, but self deleting posts in general, can, and have caused mayhem in the past. Allow me to explain... in the early years of the forum, users could delete their posts. On two occasions I can recall, some bright spark got all pissy over something, and decided to go and delete every post he had ever made! Think about that.....you write a post, a bunch of people reply with their posts, then one day, the original post is gone, making subsequent posts and whole threads nonsensical. I got rid of the self delete functionality after the second time.

I'd be thrilled to see basic image editing controls, like rotation, built in to the forum software. In fact, there is simple, free software that will just auto-rotate photos to the right orientation, so the user never even has to know they're posting sideways photos.

You highlight a similar issue; when I owned the forum, users could not edit their post if older than 3 days. This was to thwart the similar scenario aforementioned. This condition was also implemented by the new owners initially. I don't know if that still applies today, but it really should. We are human, and our species does really odd things now and again...;0)
