Over on the Specialty Aero Facebook site I spotted some info about a new Pitts derivative I hadn't seen before. A 3/4 scale Pitts Samson called "Samson Mite", powered by a Rotec R-3600.

    https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153654684297370.1073741832.121046422369&type=3

This will be S-1 sized but fitted with the Rotec R-3600 nine-cylinder radial. As both Steve Wolf and Tony Horvath are involved I'm sure the end result will turn out great. :)

Some more info on the Rotec Aerosport Facebook site:

I talked to Steve a few months ago about the airplane. It is going to be cool when completed. I believe he called it his "Fly-In" airplane.

It will be interesting to see how that engine holds up when mounted on a real aerobatic airplane.

Im curious about how it will hold up as well. My dad wanted me to fly the Rotec powered Swick T-Craft that Jim Swick was finishing up before he died but I never did get to fly it. I always thought an open cockpit S-1 with that engine would be cool.

The engine for Steves will have a different nose section, beefed up case in the nose section, and larger gears in the reduction gearbox. Larger asin length, for more contact area. They are basically making an acro engine for him.

We are actually building two, Steve building his and I mine. They will share some components but we both have some different ideas about what we want in one. Steve's will be a super light version with two ailerons and rigid gear. Mine will have 4 ailerons and bungee gear. Basically Steve is recreating his airshow airplane paint scheme and all and I am recreating the airplane that we built in 05' that is now in Germany. We hope to get them both together at Oshkosh when they are finished.

By the way its actually a 9 cylinder radial.

I think Rotec is going to switch over to the new gear box. I'm hoping the new gear box can retrofit onto an old style engine. Rotec is testing the new gearbox on their flybaby now.

The idea for the little Samsons is to offer kits if there is interest but there will be no plans available. With the different airfoil, more wing area and light weight it will quite possibly go LSA.

But step one, Steve and I wanted them so that's what we are going to start with.

Well shoot. I was saving some money for an S-1 with Wolf Wings. I guess I better start working overtime so I can have a baby Samson. It would look cool sitting next to the full scale Samson thats at my home airport.

I'm looking forward to seeing that Tony.

I've told my wife many times that if I won the lottery, my first call would be to you and Steve to break out the jigs for Samson III. (I did promise her she'd be the second call!)

I am with you Mark- something about a biplane with a huge radial is just perfect. If we both win at the same time we will have to order 2.

Can't wait to see Samsonite- I am sure it will be legit.

Can't wait to see this one. A Sport Biplane of classic design, designed around a currently available, light weight, modern radial engine. I can see this being a popular build if plans and/or kits are offered. It will be interesting to see how the Aerobatic Rotec Radial works out.

Yep, It's almost ready for cover. The wings are done and the R985 is ready to be hung after they get the fabric and sheet metal on. Jed has a prop but I dont remember how long the blades are. The 10' prop got destroyed. We got the bottom wing ribs done and most of top wing ribs done. We got swamped with work so were behind schedule on this project. I love the wingkit and how everything goes together.

That looks like a really neat little biplane. It just looks right with the round engine in the 3-view.
