Hello all,
I'm new to this forum. I've built a Pietenpol Aircamper which I've flown and loved for years. recently tried a cabin antique thinking I'd enjoy flying in the winter and with my wife more, but I just seem to love the open cockpit thing. I'm looking for something roomier, more comfortable, more able and with longer legs and the Charger has always appealed to me for it's great flying/landing qualities.
I'm seriously looking at the nice one in CA, but have just discovered the chronic gear issues when I joined this group and started reading. Evidently, this one has been beefed up with "thicker tubing and larger pivot pin" in 2015. though based on asphalt, I do fly into a lot of grass strips here in the midwest and don't want something with fragile legs. this example was excellently built by a true craftsman (I Know him and his work), so I'm sure the welds were done right, but should I look at another design? I'm not talking off field/tundra stuff, but grass strips in various states of maintenance.
I don't want to rebuild something, I just want to fly as I'm already building something.
I've got an option on a nice great lakes which I know has good gear design.
thanks all, any input is appreciated.
