• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Since I've done the plywood leading edge "mod" a few days ago I think about the transition from the plywood to the ribs.

There are serveral options and opinions - I'd like to hear yours. If you have some pictures, please attach them, too.

Possibility a) Just leave it with a sharp edge of 1/16" and to the first stich 1" after the LE. (Has been done several times, even Skip Stewards Prometeus is build this way)

Possibility b) Make a smooth transition of ~1" from leading edge to the ribs. Will result in the same profile as a) but with a fully glued fabric and additional support for the ribs.

Possibility c) Make a bigger transition using plywood or putty, such as used here and recommended if you build a Pitts S12: http://www.2wings.com/m12/log/15-3/150809_123026.html

Possibility d) Cover all the ribs and trailing edge with cap strips. Will result in a perfect shape, but add some weight. Additionally I would have a 1/8" thicker trailing edge which might affect my ailerons?!

Hope to get some ideas from the more experienced builders here. Thank you in advance, guys!

Simon
