• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Teardown of my S-1S continues, slowly. I had a really hard time getting one of the exhaust retention nuts off the #3 cylinder. The exhaust tube left no clearance to properly seat a wrench or socket on the nut (the one I'm pointing to in the picture). Ended up grabbing the nut from below and turning it very slowing only contacting two sides of it. Luckily it didn’t strip. The picture makes it look more roomy back there than it actually is. Tried all manner of wrenches, even my skinniest 1/2" box wrench.

I’m guessing this clearance isn’t an issue if the exhaust tubes are straight for another inch or so downwards from the nut before they bend inboard. Anybody else seen this problem and come up with a clever tool to get in there?

At day's end the exhaust finally surrendered and came loose. With the instrument panel and fuel system out, it's looking pretty empty...
