• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

    The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I was looking through accidents stats at the ntsb.gov website, and came across this:

=======
NTSB Identification: NYC91DHD02 .
The docket is stored on NTSB microfiche number 45379.
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Saturday, May 25, 1991 in PENNINGTON, NJ
Probable Cause Approval Date: 7/13/1993
Aircraft: BEAMONT SKYBOLT, registration: N69JB
Injuries: 1 Fatal.

THE PILOT WAS PLANNING TO MAKE A HIGH SPEED TAXI RUN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIS HOMEBUILT WHICH HE HAD JUST COMPLETED. HE INADVERTENTLY BECAME AIRBORNE. THE AIRPLANE SUDDENLY PITCHED NOSE DOWN APPROXIMATELY 45 DEGREES AND IMPACTED THE GROUND. THE PILOT HAD NOT FLOWN DURING THE PAST TWO YEARS AND HAD NO PREVIOUS TIME IN MAKE AND MODEL OF AIRPLANE.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows: THE PILOT'S INADVERTENT LIFT OFF AND FAILURE TO MAINTAIN AIRCRAFT CONTROL WHICH RESULTED IN AN INADVERTENT STALL. THE PILOT'S LACK OF RECENT EXPERIENCE AND LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN TYPE OF AIRPLANE WERE FACTORS IN THE ACCIDENT.
========

After all those thousands of manhours...that sucks.
