Has anyone a recipe for homemade smoke?

Can buy but shipping is the same as the price of the oil.

I don't know what your location is, however you may be able to find options locally without having to pay shipping. Some people use "concrete form release oil". Check with places that sell bulk loads of concrete (not lowes or home depot). When going this route, be aware that some companies now have water based form release products. Probably makes good steam, but probably not good smoke.

Also here is a good list of oil options:

I've heard that biodiesel works well. I am making up a batch to give it a try. The other is tractor hydraulic fluid you can get at some walmarts or at tractor supply.

Has anyone ever used automatic transmission fluid? Seems like the local garage would have it by the barrel (used). Considering what they pay to recycle that stuff around here, I'd think they would be happy to offload some to you.

Better check out the toxicity of the smoke from diesel or transmission fluid.

New ATF makes nice white smoke but it is more expensive than Canopus/Corvus oil. I believe diesel is more of a fire hazard than you want.

They all make mess on your belly, which is why used oil or ATF is not desireable.

I believe that none of the smoke oils are non-toxic. Which is why you want to close all of the holes in the belly, right aft to the tailpost, that let the smoke flow into the cockpit.

    Best of luck,

    Wes

There is a light weight mineral oil used on crops, often grape vines as a fungicide (particularly for powdery mildew), makes for a great white smoke. Sometimes called Stylet or Summer Oil, it's reasonably cheap given that it's used in quite large quantities.

You can buy food grade mineral oil at farm supply stores in gallon and 5 gallon jugs. Its used as a laxative for animals. Its not the cheapest option but its easy and smokes very well.

I remember using ATF to "decarbonize" the combustion chambers of old cars. You'd open the air cleaner and pour ATF down the carb while holding a fast idle. It made MASSIVE white smoke out the tailpipe.

As for cleaning the belly, I'm doing this on my Rocket so I dont have to worry about fabric. Aluminum cans are easy(er) to clean.

A lot of ag guys use “univolt n61”. I’ve only seen it in 55 gallon drums. A fuel jobber should be able to get it for you. Seems like the last I bought was about 400.00, but I could be wrong on that.

I just pumped about four gallons of unknown smoke oil out of my smoke tank, available to the first taker free of charge. The smoke system will be available soon too for a reasonable donation to the airplane maintenance fund. :)
