• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

yesterday i realized i had to weld on a few more tabs for my turtledeck floor. what a great idea priming my fuse frame was. ill back up a bit.

so i thought my frame was about done and ready for paint but wasnt sure as i am adding a few things to the plane not on the plans. i really want to do away with as many adel clamps on the tubes as possible favoring welding tabs on. although this will not be eliminated, im trying to reduce it. i figured this is a great solution to rust and thought some of you guys around the same progress level as myself, or those that will be soon could benefit from this. i was using Rustlick B on my frame to try and combat surface corrosion. it was ok, but i really didnt like it that much. made a mess when you welded on it and it really didnt work that good. so, when i thought my fuse was at a stage where nothing would be welded on for awhile, we had a scotch brighting party. "sanded" the rust off as best we could then went down the hardware store and bought about 8 cans of rattle can direct to metal primer. came out fantastic. i did this about 4 months ago and its holding up great. hardly any rust is bleeding through, and it looks better than a rusty frame sitting there. i know that little bit of surface rust wont hurt too much but why let it get there in the first place? so today i added a few tabs. took some lacquer thinner and wiped off the primer, welded the tabs on and reshot it. once im sure its all done and everything is installed, ill disassemble everything again, sandblast the frame then epoxy prime and paint it. for now, this is working great! just wanted to pass this along.....
