• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Due to two ribs breaking in my Pitts s1s i am having to recover my wings. I have always like the look of a Squared off wing tip and am feeling this is the time to do it!.
So to stir the pot on here.

Square wing tips or Round tips?
What are the advantages and disadvantages performances wise?

We will be taking the just the round edge of the end. Not extend the ailerons, so it will be a square off wingtip with stock ailerons.

I read in a article when i was in an aerodynamics class that back in WW2 fighter aircraft had different wingtips depending on their role.
If they were escorting bombers they had round or extended wingtips for extra lift at altitude (since the parasitic drag is reduce)
Fighter aircraft that we ground support had squared or clipped wings for better maneuverability (more roll rate basically) since there was less wing area.
