• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

The Aileron hinges (part 87 and 88 on plans)...the hinges on the Aileron it self...
i noticed the attach holes are really sloppy on my r/h lower wing Aileron. (Aileron was slightly damaged in ground loop...the Aileron Horn (item 126) was bent so I have to uncover Aileron to replace that and check over Aileron anyway. Upon inspection I noticed the sloppy 1/4” attach holes. (No other damage noted). So now I’m just trying to figure it the material...I’m assuming it’s 2024-T3 extrusion Plans give

.062 x 1 x 1 x 12 angle 2024 ST

As the material. I’m not following? I get the .062 thick with a 1” flange on each side but what’s the 12 for? And what’s the ST mean?

The whole plane takes 16 of these hinges at 2” long each so about 33” of material (32” with a bit of loss material for each cut) for all not 12.

Also...while I’m building new...think I should just stick with the 1/4” hole or add some oilite bushings? I’m inclined to leave the 1/4” hole and just use the bushing or bearing in the plane side part of the hinge. I believe that how it’s already set up.
