• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Several of our designs use the 1.5" axle and that pretty much locks you into a 6" wheel. Such is the case for my Acro Sport II. As a result the typical tire is a 6:00x6 (insert brand) that is sometimes over 17" tall. Often you see an awful lot of tire outside the wheel pants.

There is an easy cure for this in the form of the seldom mentioned 15x6:00x6 tire. These are almost 3" shorter than my other tires. I just purchased a set of these so I could get the wheel pants down as far as practical avoiding the "high water" look as we call it down here.

I knew there would be some weight savings but I had not counted on a total of 11 pounds! In the interest of full disclosure, the 6:00x6 tires I had were recapped Good Year Flight Custom IIs I bought early in the build but even with that I was not expecting a difference of 5 1/2 pounds per tire when compared to the Air Trac 15x6:00x6s.

15x6:00x6 tire and tube 7 pounds
6:00x6 tire and tube 12.5 pounds
