• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I came across this report today and it piqued my interest as well as left me with a question or two. First it seems to somewhat validate something my dad wrote me when I hit 500 hours flying in Vietnam. He said "The most dangerous thing on this earth is a 500 hour pilot..." I didn't much like that at the time .. but looking back he may have had a point. I was a fairly new aircraft commander and my confidence would have exceeded my competence by several degrees.

My question is, my understanding is they've determined different hour levels for most risk of "severe but not fatal accidents and "fatal" accidents. The peak severe non fatal seems to be around the 800 hour mark while the fatal seems to be around ... 500 hours ...

My college statistics class was 50 years ago ... so I was wondering if a more recent student of statistics could check this out. ( I was at a couple thousand hours total when I passed my PPL Airplane but the landing back at home base with my newly minted temporary may have been the worst of my life ... )
