• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I was adding a quart of oil to my engine today, and when I had poured about 3/4 of the bottle into the funnel, I noticed a whitish milky substance curdling in the otherwise clean oil in the funnel. I barely had time to poke it with the dipstick and verify it was liquid and not sticky as it easily broke apart as it all disappeared down the funnel. The last 1/4 quart or so, which has more of the stuff (i.e. it didn't come from the funnel), I left in the bottle. It was a brand new bottle, still sealed.

I figured it was maybe some part of the additive package that came out of suspension (this is Phillips Victory 20W50 with the Lycoming additive) that would mix back in, so I flew anyway. I forgot to look at the dipstick after landing, though. I suppose it could have been moisture which would boil off, but I don't know why it would curdle like that. I didn't see this in any of the other bottles in the case, though this might be the first bottle of a new case purchased last year, mixed in with some old bottles.

Anybody seen anything like this before?
