• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Brakes that is, not the city. Been there done that, dated a girl from there...

In particular the 30-9 model found on the Pitts and Eagle.

A friend with a S-2B was told during his inspection that his Cleveland brake discs are too thin per specs and need to be replaced. Being the cost conscious owner like the rest of us, he ordered the proper Rapco discs as a replacement.

The discs he received were actually thinner than the Cleveland discs. Upon closer review, there was a shim between the brake shoe and mounted assembly of the brakes. I have the Rapco discs on both my Wolf Pitts and Eagle, and there is no shim present, and I have the 30-9 Clevelands as well.

Confusion reigned...

With the shim, the Rapco discs will probably be too narrow. Yet, they are an approved substitute for the Clevelands. Is it alright to remove the shim and use the Rapcos? No documentation came in the box addressing that. Why not just remove the shim and continue to use the Clevelands? (If they are, as told, too thin.)

The exploded view of the 30-9 assembly on the Aircraft Spruce website shows the shim.
