• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

The fall weather is in Chicago area this week, which got me thinking about the weather this winter. As many areas, winter humidity is high around here. I have been in the habbit initially using a light bulb or 2, 75-100w in the cowl, with a heavy blanket over it. My idea is that if the "local" temp was higher than the surrounding air, it would be less humid air in the "localized" area. That idea went a step further to put a "Kats" brand 150w pad heater on the underside of the sump. I tend to leave it on at all times, (winter) along with the oil cap open. Thinking that this allows a drier localized area. The oil temps at the sump never get above 100F. As a bonus, the whole engine and compartment is at about 60-70F.

I thought that we discussed the pro/cons before, but I could not find it in my search of the archives. I would like to bring the subject up for discussion. Also, to support my view, I have recently learned that gun owners frquently put a small wattage heater in the gun cabinet for the same purposes.

Ideas.....?
