When, either on the ground or in flight during cruise, I go to lean the engine (per the Lycoming manual, until roughness or rpm drop is noted, then richen slightly, I don't have EGT), I can pull the mixture knob out almost all the way with no noticeable effect, only in the last half inch or so of travel does anything happen, and it's only slightly farther than that to where the engine quits. Is that normal? It's an O-290 with the usual MA3SPA carburetor, and nothing apparently wrong or visible slop in the linkage, which is a simple push-pull control, no vernier.
