• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I am assuming I am doing something very wrong here..hopefully some machinist type can help me:
I decided to move the flop tube inlet from the rear to a more sensible place at the front of my gas tank. I purchased a pre -made alum' flange/plug from ACS, it has a female 3/4 NPT tapped hole. I got the plug TIG welded in place. When trying to fit the tank in the plane, the protrusion of the plug clashed with a cabane strut, so I cut off 3/8 of material off the plug so the tank now fits. I then purchased a 3/4-14 NPT tap so I could re-thread the plug, since the male fitting was now only tightening a couple of turns due to the taper of the thread. The tap fits well, it rotates about a dozen times then gradually gets tighter, as expected. The problem: as it gets tighter it doesn't seem to be cutting, rather, it seems like all I am doing is wedging the thing in there, like it is bottoming out?
The drill hole size for the tapped hole is.906, which seems to accurate.

I am using a wrench about 12" long to attempt to turn and cut, do I need more torque here? or??
