• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I apologize to the group for bringing up what has surely been discussed ad-nauseum over the years. However, a search of the forum threads did not reveal any meaningful discussion. So, here it goes.....

I am in process of beginning the reassembly of the O-360 in my S-1S. I bought the plane as a project and hence, have not run the engine. It has a PS-5 carburetor that was installed when the plane was built. From my exposure to Pitts in my youth, I know that the PS-5 was the standard for homebuilt aircraft in those days. The thought of reinstalling this carburetor without having it at least surveyed, is repugnant to me. So, I am reaching out for constructive thoughts from those more experienced than I.

1. Is there a shop that still works on these units? I know parts are scarce, and expensive. I believe that I do have the preferred orange diaphragms, so it has that going for it.
2. If I were able to assure that this carburetor is airworthy, correctly setup, and good to go...Is there any reason not to fly it? They worked great back in the day for even the most dynamic maneuvers. What makes fuel injection any better than a pressure carb?
3. There are several aftermarket fuel injection systems available. Any feedback on the pluses/minuses of each brand?

If it made sense, and came down to it, I would convert to FI. My interest lies in flying a safe plane, not just spending unnecessary money to be "cool"!
Thanks for putting up with my "rook" questions!
