• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Curious what the impressions are of how competitive a Skybolt 260 would be?

I have always liked the lines of the 'Bolt, and have seen Randy Harris (Bearfeet) as well as the guy from Eastern Europe on Youtube (Szufa??) and it definitely makes a great airshow bird. I know that at least Randy's plane is also fairly modified in terms of ailerons and such.

I am just starting in competition (first 2 Sportsman contests scheduled for July and September in a friends' Extra 300L) and know that I will not be in a position to own something like the Extra without much more planning however a Skybolt 260 might be workable.

I watched an open cockpit Skybolt 180 recently and it did OK in Sportsman but looked to lack the punch needed for Intermediate or beyond. A big block Christen Eagle or S2B might be alternatives but they seem more expensive and less practical for non-competition flights.

I know the monoplanes seem to dominate Advanced and Ultimate, but that is many years away - just looking for a good balance between competition and other uses.

I am 6'2", 190, and the Extra is my only tailwheel time so far.

Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.
