• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Hey guys,

I'm waiting to pick up my Smith project and also waiting for the plans to arrive. From what it looks like the original airfoil has a flat bottom and might be something like a Clark Y.

I went to visit a guy that had the plans for the new Smith version called Smith Miniplane 2000. Well, he gave me the blueprints because he said he would never build one so I brought it home and studied it.

Besides the plans being some of the worst I have ever seen the airfoil on the drawings is the 23013. So far I can't find anybody that has built with this wing.

I know that the airfoil has less drag and a little more lift but what else would change? The stall characteristics should change right? The stall difference between a Cub (usa35-flat bottom) and a Taylorcraft (23012) is noticeable but would it be similar in a biplane?

I'm reading the new version of the plans and it makes me wonder why he would change the airfoil to this.

Mike
